Yep, it’s cold outside…you can still get fit inside!

In Nebraska, it can be more challenging to get exercise in the winter. Walking is one form of exercise that many enjoy when the weather is nice. In a recent interview with Pam Thielen, Wellness Coach and owner of Get Fit Savvy, we learned that there are many alternatives to walking that can help us get or stay fit indoors. She suggests that if you are able, try going up or down stairs a few times a day. If you don’t have stairs, you could use an aerobic step instead. These activities will use your muscles and get your heart pumping. One of Pam’s favorite’s is to put on some music and dance like nobody’s watching. Dancing is a great way to get some movement and music is known to have many psychological benefits.

Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older Americans. Maintaining strength, especially core strength, is crucial. Simple exercises such as squats, push-ups, planks and core work can maintain and even build strength until you can get “back out there”.   Each exercise can be modified to meet your current physical abilities. Squats can be modified to rising from a chair, push-ups and planks can be done on your knees, against a step or chair, or even against a wall. Core work can be done by sitting on a chair turned sideways, pulled out from the wall, leaning back to touch the wall with your shoulders and sitting back up. Pam also highlights several weight exercises that can be beneficial. Check out these and other exercises, even quickie workout videos at www.facebook.com/getfitsavvy/

Pam also suggests that technology can be helpful and motivating. Wrist fitness trackers have become very popular. They can measure many things; steps taken, distance traveled, calories burned, sleep patterns, food intake, etc. Using technology like this can enable you to easily set some goals and let the tracker encourage you and show you your progress.
